• Forsyth County Schools’ special education programs are founded upon the belief that all children are capable of learning and being successful in school experiences which are designed to develop academic, social, emotional, behavioral, and independence skills for active participation in their community.

One to two classrooms on each grade level contain students who receive Special Education services. They could be served in their homeroom class, another classroom on the grade level, or the Special Education resource setting.

This is year 22 for me, teaching mostly in Special Education.  I taught middle school in Fulton County for the first ten years of my career and have been in a Forsyth County elementary school ever since, a Badger from the beginning.

I have a Bachelor’s degree in Psychology from West Georgia and Master’s degree in Middle Grades Math from Piedmont University.  I look forward to serving the BWE community as PBIS Coach as well as continuing my role in Special Education.

My family is my whole, entire world.  My husband, Chad, and I just celebrated our 20th anniversary, and we have three boys: Caden (17), Nolan (15), and Dylan (10) who keep us on our toes.  You can usually catch us at a field or court somewhere watching lacrosse or basketball or taking a Jeep ride in attempt to slow things down a bit. Wind therapy.  I share the role of queen of the household with my four-legged girl, Bailey Carney (2).

Hi...I am Melissa and this will be my 24th year of teaching....how am I that old? I spent my first 10 years teaching 2nd grade and then gifted for 2 years in Gwinnett County. I moved to Forsyth County and have spent the last 12 years teaching Special Education at Johns Creek and then Brandywine.

I have two boys, Ryan (16) and Ethan (14). Both are at West High School. They are a full-time JOB!

My family is the world to me and we are super close.

As if teaching is not enough, I also am a realtor. I got my real estate license when I began teaching and have always done it on the side for family and friends. Thankfully I work with lots of great teachers who need houses:)

Speech-language therapy is provided by Ms. Amy Knapp, Ms. Claire Green, Ms. Brooke Richard in both resource and inclusion settings for pre-school through fifth grades.  Students receive services through small group instruction and/or inclusion within the general education environment based on their individual needs.  This instruction focuses on the five major areas of communication: articulation, receptive and expressive language, voice, and fluency. The students are instructed using a variety of different modalities to ensure successful communication.
