    Gifted FAQ

Who can refer a child for gifted testing?  A student may be referred for consideration for gifted education services by teachers, counselors, administrators, parents or guardians, peers, self, and other individuals with knowledge of the student’s abilities. Referrals may be made at any time, but they will not be considered until the testing window opens.

What happens after my child gets referred for gifted? All gifted referrals will be discussed by the GET team. The GET Team is a group of teachers and administrators that work with gifted/high-achieving students. The team will decide if the child will benefit from testing. Several factors are discussed, such as classroom performance, motivation and maturity. There are several parts of the test and it can take weeks of focus at different times of the day (up to an hr. of testing a day). If the team feels it is appropriate to test, the parents are notified, and it is required that the parents sign a permission to test. This form has more details about testing and the format.

How can I prepare my child for the test? Knowledge or skills needed are developed as a result of all school and life experiences. These are not tests you can, or should, prepare for as they are meant to measure innate ability. We recommend that you do not overemphasize the importance of these tests or act in a way so as to add to any test anxiety. Make sure that your child gets a good night’s sleep prior to testing and has a nutritious breakfast each morning before testing.

What tests will my child take? The evaluation includes administration of assessments in the areas of Mental Ability, Academic Achievement, Creativity, and/or Motivation.

How long does the testing process take? Each situation is different, but it typically takes about a month.

When will I receive my child’s scores? Some of the evaluation instruments used by Forsyth County Schools are scored professionally by the test publishing companies, and there is an assessment progression in place for all students; therefore, it may take up to 12 weeks for the entire assessment screening process. I assure you that I will notify you as soon as I receive test scores.

What happens if my child qualifies for gifted? If your child qualifies for gifted, he or she will receive gifted services by Ms. Shelnutt. They will communicate more information to those who qualify for services.

What happens if my child does not qualify? Test scores are valid for two years; therefore, students are not considered eligible for re-evaluation until two school years after initial gifted program testing.
