    9th Grade Literature and Composition

    This course content focuses on a wide range of genres in world literature with an emphasis on literary analysis. The integrated study of composition will include basic research skills, expository and persuasive, writing with an emphasis on technical writing. Sentence structure and grammar usage will be included throughout the writing process and integrated with speaking, listening and vocabulary skills. Extensive reading, public speaking and presentation skills are also included in this course.  
     
    9th Grade Literature and Composition (Honors)
    This course focuses upon a wide range of genres in world literature with an emphasis on literary analysis. The integrated study of composition will include basic research skills, expository and persuasive, writing with an emphasis on technical writing. Sentence structure and grammar usage will be included through writing about literature and integrated with speaking, listening and vocabulary skills. Extensive reading, public speaking and presentation skills are also included in this course. Other topics specific to preparing students for the rigors of an Advanced Placement (AP) course will be integrated throughout the course. 
     
    10th Grade Literature and Composition

    This course is designed for students who are working on grade level. It develops descriptive, personal narrative, expository, and persuasive writing skills and includes grammar, mechanics, and usage. It introduces a variety of authors and selections from literature, poetry, short stories, novels, drama, and classical mythology. It engages students in the research process. It stresses vocabulary development and requires written literary analysis through discussion of the elements of literature. It develops thinking, organizing, interpersonal communication (both verbal and nonverbal), and use of analogies, metaphors and their application to writing.

    10th Grade Literature and Composition (Honors)
    This course is designed for students who are working on grade level.     American Literature and Composition
    This course focuses on a survey of American literature from the Colonial Period to the modern era. Writing objectives center upon essays (emphasis on expository), research, and critical analyses papers. Extensive reading, public speaking and presentation skills are also included in this course.

    Advanced Placement Language and Composition
    This course exposes students to college-level rigor and provides them with the opportunity to become skilled readers of prose written in a variety of periods, disciplines, and rhetorical contexts. It is designed for 11th grade students who have previously demonstrated proficiency in reading and writing. Students are expected to take the Advanced Placement examination upon completion of the course. Summer assignments are required. This literature module must be taught in the 11th grade and is recommended as a designated substitute for American Literature.
     
    English/British Literature and Composition
    This course is a survey of British Literature from the Anglo-Saxon Period to the present.  It builds upon the American Literature and Composition course and focuses on literature and informational texts, writing modes and genres, and essential conventions for reading, writing, and speaking. Students will develop an understanding of chronological context and the relevance of period structures in British literature. They will also develop an understanding of the ways the period of literature affects its structure and how the chronology of a work affects its meaning. Students will read across the curriculum to develop their academic and personal interests in different subjects. While the continued focus is expository writing in British literature, students will also demonstrate competency in argumentative and narrative genres. Instruction in language conventions will occur within the context of reading, writing, and speaking, rather than in isolation. Students will also demonstrate an understanding of speaking and listening skills for a variety of purposes.
      
    Advanced Composition
    Students will focus on different writing genres and organizational structures: expository, argument, narrative, descriptive, comparison-contrast, exemplification, process analysis, classification, cause and effect, and definition. Language skills (grammar and usage) and research will be a major component of the class. This course focuses on looking at literature through different perspectives and modes. Novel studies include British and American selections from traditional to contemporary works in both fiction and non-fiction.  Students will complete semester-long projects that incorporate 21st century literacy skills.  Students must be able to utilize technology independently and consistently in order to be successful.  Students need to be open to learn more about themselves, their work habits, their strengths/weaknesses and the world around them. (Alternative credit to English/British Literature) 
     
    Advanced Placement Literature and Composition
    This course is designed for seniors who have previously demonstrated proficiency in reading and writing.  Students gain exposure to college level rigor and accountability. The course includes intensive study of works from various genres and students are asked to analyze poetry, drama, the short story, and the novel. Critical writing experiences include expository, analytical and argumentative essays. Students are expected to take the Advanced Placement examination upon completion of this course. Summer assignments are required.   
      
    Advanced Placement Seminar
    This course is designed for juniors who have previously demonstrated proficiency in reading and writing and plan to take the Advanced Placement Research course next year. AP Seminar is an amazing opportunity to develop high-level research skills for college and beyond. Students will learn to analyze the purpose and usefulness of information and apply it to self-generated interests for further research and presentation. They will also work collaboratively to pursue research ideas and develop group presentation skills. AP Seminar is a required course if students plan to recieve an AP Capstone Diploma.
     
    Dramatic Writing
    Dramatic writing explores the film industry writing career and the class will introduce the film industry and open up windows of writing career possibilities.
    Students will learn about the writing process using story as their curriculum and throughout the year will write a 10 minute play for submission as a playwright, write and pitch a television series to a network and/or studio and write a 15-page film script for an original movie production idea.
    This class will give students TWO ENGLISH CREDITS: dramatic writing 804285y AND Advanced Composition 10305x.
